Nutrition and Healthy Kidney Function

Today, March 9th, is World Kidney Day.  So, since it is also Nutrition Month, we wanted to talk about what a Kidney Friendly Diet is.  It is important to remember that you should always consult your doctor about which diet is best for you, but these are basic guidelines to keep your kidneys healthy, with or without kidney disease.

Why Your Kidneys Are Important

Your kidneys play several roles without your body, but some of the most important ones are listed below:

  • Play a key role in bone and heart health
  • Balance the acid/alkaline levels in the body
  • Filters out & prevent build up of waste products and fluid

Chronic Kidney Disease

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a progressive loss of kidney function.  It affects about 1 in 10 people worldwide and 26 million Americans.  CKD is incurable and requires Medical Nutrition Therapy. Heart attacks and strokes are more common among people with CKD.  People with CKD experience more inflammation and have a higher isk of cardiovascular disease.

How Can I Lower My Risk For CKD?

  • Control Blood Sugar Levels
  • Control Blood Pressure
  • Eat Healthy
  • Stay Physically Fit
  • Use Pain Meds Only as Directed
  • Limit OTC NSAIDs
  • Hydrate Well
  • Don’t Smoke

When you have CKD it is important that you alter your diet in order to eat best for your disease.  There are certain foods that should be limited and a few that are good for overall kidney health.  Again, it is important that remember that these are just basic guidelines for healthy kidneys.

Limit These Foods When You Have CKD:

  • Proteins
  • Salt
  • Potassium
  • Phosphorus
  • Fluids

For Healthy Kidneys Eat These Foods:

  • Red Bell Peppers
  • Kale
  • Cabbage
  • Cranberries
  • Garlic
  • Blueberries
  • Cherries
  • Strawberries
  • Cauliflower
  • Egg Whites
  • Apples
  • Fish
  • Olive Oil
