Exercising After a Heart Attack


After a heart attack or cardiac event, it is important that individuals change the way that they eat and exercise, to prevent future heart problems.  It is important to remember that you must first consult your doctor before beginning any exercise program, but especially after you’ve had a heart attack.


There are certain exercises that after a heart attack are more safe than others.  One of the best exercises to start doing after a heart attack is walking.  Walking is beneficial for the body because it uses many muscles of the body.  With using more muscles, it is more beneficial for a person’s heart health.  To start a walking program, you can begin by walking around your house or yard.  Start by walking for a few minutes and then taking a break, before continuing.  Slowly build up to walking 30 to 45 minutes at one time.  You can make walking a social activity by walking with your friends!


It is also beneficial after a heart attack to remember to do strength training.  Resistance exercises have been shown to be good for individuals after a heart attack.  One good resistance exercise to start with is unweighted bicep curls, the progress to using light weights.  It is recommended that you participate in resistance training 2 days a week.

There are programs to help with making a good exercise program and making lifestyle changes after a heart attack.  Look for outpatient cardiac rehab programs so you can make the best changes for you that will last.  This can be helpful because starting a new program can seem like a daunting task.  A rehab program will allow you the proper support to get you started on a healthier start.

The key after a heart attack is starting a healthier life to avoid further heart complications.  With the right program and right assistance, it is possible to start living a heart healthy life!  It is important to talk to your doctor before starting any sort of exercise program.
